Brij V. Lal is a Professor of Pacific and Asian History in the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at The Australian National University. He has published widely on the history and politics of his native Fiji and on the history and culture of the Indian diaspora. His latest book is Islands of Turmoil: Elections and Politics in Fiji and, as co-editor, 1987 and All That: Fiji Twenty Years On. He was a member of the three-person Fiji Constitution Review Commission whose report formed the basis of Fiji’s present (1997) multiracial constitution.
